How these contracts renew
Some of the best-known HR and employment law services for small employers sign you up for a fixed first term, often several years long. When it ends, the agreement renews by itself for a further term, unless you’ve given written notice in time.
In the terms we read, the notice is counted back from the end of the term, which is the day before the renewal. A term that renews on 1 March 2028 ends on 29 February 2028, so six months’ notice has to be given by 29 August 2027. Miss that day, and an agreement worded like this carries on for the next term, fees included.
Citation’s published terms renew for periods equal to the first term, unless either side gives written notice at least six months before the end. BrightHR’s agreement form renews for the same period, with at least six months’ written notice; its software terms say 90 days for agreements made from 19 June 2024. Peninsula publishes no client terms on its UK site, and customer reviews describe six months’ notice. We found no published terms for Croner, Avensure or WorkNest’s UK advice contracts. We read all of these on 6 November 2026.
None of this replaces your own agreement. The first term is set in the agreement you signed, not in published terms, and terms change. Check its renewal clause and its schedule before you rely on any date here.
Send your notice a week before the last day, by recorded delivery and by email, and keep the proof of both. Ask the provider to confirm in writing the day the contract ends. Before then, download what you’ll need from their system: employment contracts, the handbook, staff records and any open case notes.
Questions
How much notice does Peninsula need?
Peninsula doesn’t publish its client terms on its UK site. Customer reviews describe six months’ notice, and a contract that renews for the same period again if notice isn’t given. Reviewers disagree on how long the first term is. Your own signed agreement is what counts, so check its renewal clause and its schedule.
What if I’ve missed the notice date?
Once the last day has passed, an agreement that renews automatically goes on to its next term. The calculator tells you when that last day was, then gives you the dates for the first renewal you can still give notice for, so you can put them in your calendar now. You can ask your provider to let you leave sooner; whether they have to depends on your agreement.
Can I just stop paying?
Cancelling the direct debit doesn’t by itself end the agreement. If it has renewed, the provider may still claim the fees for the rest of the term. The way out is written notice by the last day, sent so you can show it arrived: by recorded delivery and by email.
Do I lose my documents when I leave?
You may lose access to anything kept in the provider’s own system once the agreement ends. Before then, download your employment contracts, the staff handbook, staff records and any open case notes. The letter the calculator writes asks the provider to confirm that your records stay available to download until the contract ends.
